Building affordable housing in Montréal, now and for the long term
The Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal (SHDM) is a parapublic organization that operates as a non-profit real estate development and management company. As the City's real estate arm, the SHDM contributes to Montreal's social and economic revitalization by developing and managing a real estate portfolio that is primarily residential and commercial. It pursues its vision of building affordable housing now, and for the long term, by increasing the supply of residential rental housing for a diverse clientele, including vulnerable individuals, and promoting access to homeownership.
With nearly 40 years of experience, the SHDM has acquired solid expertise in non-profit real estate, becoming a reliable and experienced partner capable of supporting major residential, industrial, and commercial projects that contribute to urban revitalization and the supply of affordable housing in Montréal.

Affordable housing units
The SHDM is working on long term solutions to develop and maintain the supply of affordable and social housing units in Montréal. As of December 31, 2025, its residential rental portfolio consists of 395 buildings, comprising of 5,246 units available for a diverse clientele.
Access Condo
Since 2025, the SHDM has accredited 33 high-quality affordable projects, totaling 3,925 units, contributing to the diversification of Montréal’s condominium market and its urban revitalization.
Commercial Space
In total, the SHDM owns nearly one million square feet of commercial space, spread across seven buildings, as well as two parking lots in Montréal. Several SHDM projects have contributed to Montréal’s economic and social vitality. For example: Cité du Multimédia, Cité du commerce électronique, Complexe Chaussegros-de-Léry, and Îlot Balmoral.
